Eksepsjonell Service, ok beliggenhet, flotte snorkle muligheter

Nice hotel, great snorkeling, need to hire a car

We chose the Récif because of it's accessible snorkeling, this did not dissapoint! We brought our own masks and snorkels and although visibility was variable depending on weather the coral was lovely with lots of fish variety. Hotel is nicely laid out, feels modern but small enough to feel quite private. Lots of sun loungers etc, never felt crowded. We had a sea view deluxe room on the ground floor which was OK but a bit basic, dark and damp smelling. We would suggest an upstairs room if you get the option. We went half board as one of us wasn't drinking, this was a mistake as drinks were quite pricey and there is nowhere else to walk to in local area. Breakfast was great, lots of variety, fresh fruit etc but dinner buffet was a bit dissapointing, no local options, reminded me a bit of a French roadside service station (soggy crudités, strange mousse etc). We did try the traditional Kot Nou restaurant one night which was a bit better but in a strange windowless room which felt a bit odd... We did have a nice stay here though hiring a car is essential as there is nothing else accessible by foot and the local area doesn't actually feel particularly welcoming when exploring by foot. Extra good bits about this place are the free pool table upstairs, free tea and coffee, free water refills and free glass bottomed boat (although we didn't try this) We'd definately come back.

Sad and deflating

I have no idea where most of the people reviewing this hotel stayed but it does not seem like it was here. This is without doubt the most average and half-baked hotel experience I have ever had. Where to start? The room. Very poorly maintained with low quality fixtures and fittings and literally nowhere to put your stuff. Not a single cupboard or a single drawer, just a few shelves most of which were too high for my wife to reach. 10 hangers between two people. Several plug sockets did not work. The lights did not work but that was resolved after 2 trips to reception. Room cleaning always seemed very half-hearted and a constant musty smell. Water regularly flooded out of the AC unit so we had towels on the floor. Floor not mopped once while we were there, and it showed. Pillow and duvet stank like there was a dead body in them and obviously do not get washed with the covers. Just a really sad and depressing environment to spend two weeks. Shower takes 10 mins to warm up. If you watch their facebook video of the rooms it is a masterclass of editing and misrepresentation. The rooms are frankly terrible and miserable. One plus point was there was no table so I asked for one and they brought one – just the right size and really helped me out as I needed to do some work on my laptop. Wifi was persistently poor, constantly dropping out. Nowhere in the hotel was any better. Kept having to swap devices to find one that the wifi had not kicked out. One bath towel and one hand towel each when you arrive, but they provided another set when asked to (you should not have to ask). Incidentally we probably had one of the best rooms as most seemed to be much smaller. Our room was large with a large terrace area. Restaurants. The completely baffling lack of physical menus is bizarre. You have to use your phone and scroll through tiny print on PDF menus. Why can’t we have some proper menus? It seemed like a perverse style over substance choice. Lunch was a limited full-service menu that was OK-ish but ran out of variety quickly. Breakfast was OK but they often did not bring things out like butter and if you ask for it they either overtly ignore you or get it at random. Evening dinner buffet was dire. Same-ish limited selection every night with fish or chicken cooked until hard and tasteless. When I say ‘limited’ I mean really limited 2 or 3 main dishes each night. Sometimes some beef or pork which was OK but nothing special. Always potatoes ‘with’ something that was not actually there like mushrooms or tomato (invisible?). Deserts always terrible and tasteless. Completely bizarre way of offering the food in lidded pots with nowhere to put down the lid so when multiple people trying to get in multiple pots it was carnage. Staff were variable. Some very friendly and helpful but some were unsmiling and openly miserable and overtly unhelpful which left me feeling like I was just an annoyance being there (I think with some staff that was the intention). Smile when chatting to each other and then immediately look as miserable as possible when interacting with guests. As a plus service mostly quite quick and often offered another drink if you finished the first one. Restaurant full of stray dogs all day begging at the table – very poor. The L'Ocean restaurant does not really exist. There are tables on the beach but they are very rarely used (except by the dogs as begging/toilet area). Anyone who asks for a L’Ocean meal gets it in the main buffet area but you get a different colour table light. Classy. Tried it one night and had fish but it was desperately overcooked so did not bother again. Did not try the Kot Nou. Drinks. Bar drinks are limited and generic. No mini-bar in the room but there is a fridge. You are allowed to get two canned drinks a day from the ‘shop’ (which is not a real shop as it’s always closed and you need to find the nice lady to open it). This is certainly not what I would expect with and all inclusive. No coffee or tea in the room but you can ask for some at the ‘shop’. Non-inclusive drinks available in the ‘shop’ but obscenely expensive so best to walk down to the local supermarket. No ice machine in the hotel which was really annoying but the man at the bar would give us a cup of ice when we asked. Given one water bottle on arrival to collect our own water from the gym tap (the only drinkable water in the hotel). Why one bottle for two people? Like most people we just took another one from the restaurant. Gym / Spa: Did not try the Spa, but the gym is tiny and poorly equipped. Hotel environment. Nice location overlooking the beach but the snorkelling was variable. Most days the sea was too dangerous because there is no real lagoon here; the waves break right outside the hotel (even had surfers some days within metres of the beach). The coral and fish is OK but if you have been to less spoilt reefs you will be disappointed. The beach and the hotel are full of sad stray dogs and several times we had to move after finding dog poo next to the bed, which was not cleared up very quickly. The pool was OK but its not an infinity pool any more as it was normally about 100mm too low to work as one. Small issue but it is definitely not an infinity pool. Loads of sunbeds on the beach but the beach is at such a steep angle the beds are mostly unusable as you slide down them. Surrounding area. Dirty, rubbish everywhere and of course the stray dogs. Local people park their cars in the park next door and play amazingly loud music from their car sound systems. I would be impressed at the volume if I was not trying to sleep. Walked along the beach about 2km north but left me feeling miserable at the state of the place so I didn’t do it again. Entertainment. Did not really stick around to listen but others seemed to like it. A bit Vic Reeves pub singer sometimes, but not bad for a small hotel in fairness. Other. Never got a welcome drink on arrival despite being told we would. Had to pay 1250MRU to keep the room until late check out (some reviewers say it is free – it wasn’t for us). You are meant to be able to get fresh beach towels at a little wagon near reception but my wife went dozens of time (sometimes four attempts in a day) and there were never any fresh towels, so we ended up with filthy towels. All in all, my stay here left me totally sad and deflated. I do not understand how it gets so many positive reviews. Everything is just so half-baked. I have thought that perhaps it’s me and I’m spoilt from staying at more expensive places, but having left it a week to think about it, I am sure it isn’t me. I have tried so hard to understand why people seem to like this pace and it just beats me completely. I don’t normally do reviews but having been mislead so much by the others I felt I needed to add some balance. In hindsight I should have asked to be moved to a different hotel and salvaged some of the holiday.

Great experience! Definitely recommend!

The best stay ever. The environment was pleasant and welcoming. Both check-in and check-out were professionally handled and easy. The hotel was wonderful. It was even better than expected. The price was amazing. Would definitely stay there again.
