An enjoyable stay

An enjoyable week in an ideal setting for a winter getaway. The rooms are clean and spacious, however they do not have air conditioning which could make a summer stay oppressive. The mosquito nets do not give adequate protection when the welcome sea breeze blows. Mosquito sliding panels would be a better option so the balcony doors could be left open at all times then. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and there are some good acts in the bar of an evening. The hotel is well situated for access to the main centre.

Fabulous place close to Funchal

Location, location, location :) It might be a little distance from Funchal centre or any amenities, but the views are to die for. Being a volcanic island one can’t expect long stretches of sandy beaches. The hotel pool dues make up for this for sure. The hotel is unique due it being built directly on a cliff, descending all the way to the seafront. There is a bus stop on top of the cliff (close to the entrance of the hotel) but the hotel offers a free shuttle to the centre of Funchal a few times a day. The only disappointment I’ve found is the hotel food. It’s less than mediocre, which is a crying shame. The restaurant staff do however really make up for it with their friendly and very welcoming attitude.

Something good and something bad

Good: General cleanliness, sea view from the rooms, service Bad: Or should I say VERY BAD...we were charged for watching a movie we never watched and at a time when we were already sleeping and also we didn't even turn on the TV once during the whole week. I tried to discuss it with the receptionist, but it had no effect. We don't mind a few euros in this matter, but such an error that cannot be corrected and we have to pay the bill for it is completely incomprehensible and ensures that we will never come back to this hotel again.

Very enjoyable holiday the the Orca Praia Hotel

Having recently returned home from a very enjoyable two weeks at the Orca Praia Hotel in Funchal we would like to review our experience of this holiday. We chose this accommodation as part of a Jet2 package on a half-board basis, having looked at a number of other options prior to booking, and having previously stayed in another nearby hotel about 6 years ago. The Orca Praia is situated a little way outside Funchal, not realistically within walking distance, but the hotel has a shuttle bus service into Funchal. It is also on a convenient bus route with stops on the main road immediately outside the hotel. The public bus service is convenient and seemed reliable, but could get quite crowded at stops closer to the town, so it is best to board a bus for the return journey at the terminus near the cable car. With regard to the hotel, the staff were all very friendly and helpful. Both breakfast and dinner are on a buffet basis and there was plenty of choice. The room we had was spacious and all the rooms have a sea view and are south facing. The rooms can feel quite hot when returning to them on a sunny day, but there are large patio doors which can be opened fully and the room soon cools down with the breeze that is usually present in this part of Madeira, so we never felt the lack of air conditioning was an issue. This hotel is built on a cliff face and is elevated from sea level. To get to the pool area and its associated snack bar there are a significant number of steps. Similarly there is quite a steep slope from the reception to the main road adjacent to the hotel. This didn’t come as a surprise as it is mentioned in the brochure details, but it is worth mentioning that it may not be the best choice for those with limited mobility. For those more active, however, the pathway down to the pool and the walks along the coastal path are well worth the effort. Finally, this holiday was for a special birthday. Although we hadn’t mentioned this to the hotel, a bottle of bubbly was delivered to the room on my birthday which was a really nice surprise. I would like to thank the management for this kind gesture which was entirely unexpected. The Orca Praia is somewhere that we would certainly consider returning in the future.

Hotel with good service

Older, but clean hotel near the two cities of Funchal and Camara de Lobos (half an hour walk along the beach) with very helpful and kind staff. A hearty breakfast in the form of a buffet is enough for you to spend the whole day wandering around the island
