Good Hotel, but No 'WOW' Factor (3.5 STAR GOOD)
I feel very conflicted writing this review. Even though this hotel will tick so many boxes, it fell short in some key areas; which may speak more about our family's increasing expectations from a holiday. So bear in mind this review is written from a family point of view. HOTEL LOBBY - PRO: Very helpful, easy check in service. Lobby looks fabulous, very nice to see when you first enter. ROOM 4/5 - PRO: We have a toddler so we requested a room for 3. We were given a fold out chair bed and two small double beds put together, which we all slept in. Comfortable bed. Clean room, spacious and modern. - CON: You only get one free bed change a week (not advertised). With a toddler who has accidents this is a costly expense. Our room wasn't always swept so there was always sand in our room. Also moths kept hiding in our pillows. FOOD - 3/5 - PRO: Large selection of food; two sections where cooks cook in front of you, fish and meats, which was nice. Fresh orange juice in the morning was lovely. I was happy with the bar/pool buffet from 10-6pm, which is handy if you miss the restaurant. -CONS: Food was a bit repetitive and bland and felt a bit like food you'd get from Iceland. There is an Allinclusive+ section where it looked there was a bit more effort made for the food appetisers. Only once was there outdoor cooking from what I could tell. This should be more often. For children who sleep earlier, it would be much more helpful if dinner started at 6pm, not 7. POOL - 2/5 PRO: 5 pools to choose from, otherwise I would have rated this 1/5. CON: Very disappointed. One pool is meant to be heated. It was not. Again not advertised. It's heated during the colder seasons. For this reason (while it was fine fo me), for my 80 year old mum and toddler it was too cold. So we never used the pools. It will not be an issue for the majority but majorly impacted our experience of the hotel. Not an issue but be aware these are salt water pools. The kids play adventure pool looks great with the big skull at the top pouring out water, but it was stone cold water. ACTIVITIES/ ENTERTAINMENT - 4/5 PRO: Lots of kids evening and day activities, very happy. The dancing in the evening was so much fun for our toddler. The activities were plentiful, we enjoyed mini golf, yoga, stretching in the morning at 10. There's also tennis, volleyball. CON: The Fire by the Pool night was a good effort, but very underwhelming with the jugglers dropping their batons constantly, the trip wire guy fell off his wire and when the fire guy finally came out he could only manage 3 bursts. At our last hotel (Occidental Lanzarote) every night there was either a singer, magician or other entertainer. Barcelo need to do the same every night. Especially as some families will leave just before or arrive after. For instance there are some pool side dancing/circus acts at about 12, but ONLY on Mondays. BEACH - 3.5/5 PRO: Very close which is one of the reasons I picked the hotel, maybe a 3 minute walk. Lots of sunbeds at 10 Euros. There are schools of fish near the rocky areas if you are lucky. CON: The sand is a very coarse. I could not tell this from the photos, so I was a bit disappointed. It actually feels like it could be a man made beach with the way it looks. PIER/MARINA - 4.5/5 PRO: The pier area is partly part of of Barcelo (about 15 mins walk) so we were able to get a coffee being all inclusive there. By the sea lion enclosure you can sit on the pier and feed the fish which are plentiful! A few souvenir shops are here too. CON: There are two sea lions on show in a small pool cage. I felt very sorry for them, it just seemed too small. The glass blottom boat at 16 Euros each is a waste of money, but could be just bad timing when we went out. STAFF - 5/5 No cons, from the cleaners to the restaurant staff, all where very friendly and helpful. Overall, I think Barcelo could make a few changes to turn this into a spectacular hotel. As it is I would still recommend it, but I would not return.
Great location, recently refurbed
This is our 5th visit to the hotel and first since Covid. The Hotel has been recently furbished. It is a large hotel in 3 blocks (6,7 and 8) over 3 floors. The rooms on the ground floor have sun loungers on the terrace or hot tubs. The hotel is a stone's throw from the beach. The hotel is 15 minutes from the airport and the hotel in on the incoming flight pass so you will hear some air traffic during the day. We stayed fully inclusive in block 6 on the upper floor. Food - The pool bar offers a good range of food options from wraps and sandwiches to hot food. There are healthy salads and fruit available. The buffet restaurant contains a wide variety of foods with a vegan corner. There is a freshly cooked area where the chefs will cook bacon, eggs and omelets in the morning, fish and meat at lunch and the evening. This section in very popular and queues do form in busy times. We had no issues with food. Rooms - these are all modern. Beds are comfortable. Each room comes with a safe but it is not free and is chargeable on a daily basis. Bars - The hotel needs to gear up the staffing levels especially in the evening as there are often queues of people waiting to be served. Pools - There are 3 pools, all of which are kept clean. They are salt water. Sunbeds - We arrived at mid day and found sunbeds. There are plenty for everyone. We stayed first week of the school holidays. Entertainment - There is a kids club and the animation team do a great job. Evening exertainment is varied, musical acts, acrobats, magic shows. There is a daily mini disco for the kids at 8.30 - 9.30pm which is very popular. Overall hotel is great value for money, I would recommend.
Visited Barcelo as a family of 4. We have 2 girls aged 9 and 11. We came home on Wednesday 4th August and none of us wanted to leave. The hotel is fantastic and in the perfect location for walks out. The food is quite repetitive however still nice. We ate out a couple of nights which was a nice change. Certainly recommend eating out at Fado Rock. A bit of a shame that the pool is salt water but it certainly doesn't spoil the fun. The animation team are fantastic for all ages. Always something going on for you to get involved in if you want to. Have to give a special mention to Camila from the animation team who is absolutely amazing. She goes above and beyond and made so much fun for our children. Our daughter was so sad to leave her. Would certainly recommend this hotel.
A very happy holiday!
This was the perfect hotel for me and my two children to spend a week holiday. Even though it was a massive resort with many guests it was a spacious setting and never felt over crowded. There was plenty to do and the easy access to pools and the beach made for very relaxing days. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The entire hotel was kept immaculately clean. There were plenty of food options to keep everyone happy. I highly recommend.
