This hotel is near the marine conservation area, and perfect for a relaxing holiday. The views are glorious and what a location! The walk down the hill to Gerakas beach took about 15 minutes and was well worth it. We even saw turtles hatching one morning. It was more of a trek back in the heat but quite manageable. The reception area of the hotel is bright, clean and welcoming. The ladies on reception were always friendly and helpful, especially Elke, who went out of her way to help us. Our sea-view room was very large, with a huge curved balcony. It had a full-sized fridge, a kitchenette, which we didn't use, and a small, but well-planned, bathroom. There was always plenty of hot water and clean towels. Unfortunately it was NOT a luxury suite and we question whether it was worth paying over £350 extra. The decor was bland and some of the furnishings were very tired. The bed was comfy but the mattress was starting to sag. The pool area was fairly small and very busy. Unlike previous reviewers on Trip advisor, we didn't have a problem finding umbrellas or sunbeds but we did have a problem getting pool towels. We like to use our hotel as a base from which to explore a new area. Because of the heat, we set off early to go to the beach or explore the island, returning most days in the early afternoon. By then, it was too late to get towels. During our stay we had to use our own beach towels and wash them every day: a bit frustrating, as I had checked about towels before leaving home. We also found that the pool staff treated us very differently to the guests who spent a lot of time at the pool and bought drinks or food. However, our main complaint about that area was that it was not very clean. The pool was murky and we never saw it being cleaned. The day we arrived someone spilt coffee on one of the tables and it was still dirty the day we left. Rubbish was rarely tidied up. This was very disappointing, especially as the rest of the hotel was so immaculate. There was no pool-side shower. Instead we had to walk down the hill, where there were very primitive showers opposite the carpark. The day we left, we had to use these, as the hotel was full, so we couldn't keep our room. It was not a pleasant experience. The shower tray outlet was a hole in the wall about 4cm above the tray. Consequently, it never drained and you were standing in someone else's dirty water. The shower was hand-held and there was nowhere to put toiletries or clean clothes. This was definitely not 4 star. Our booking was for bed and breakfast and the breakfast was better than we would normally expect for Greece. There was a wide choice of both hot and cold food and the fresh oranges to make juice were very welcome. The views from the restaurant were spectacular: even better than from our suite. We ate twice at the Villa Rossa restaurant. It was lovely to sit amongst the cypress trees and the staff were friendly. The Greek music night was excellent and the food was perfectly acceptable. We then discovered Perfetto, across the road from the hotel, where we found very friendly staff and excellent traditional Greek food at extremely reasonable prices. We booked 2 trips through Elke at Reception with Zografakis Travel, and these were the highlight of our holiday. A special mention must go to the guide, Nicky, who went out of her way to make each day perfect.
We are currently staying at Gerakas Belvedere Hotel and are delighted with our choice. The hotel is lovely. The spacious rooms are very well equipped, and spotless, with daily room clean, and sheets and towels changed every 3 days. The staff are delightful and extremely helpful, particularly Elke on reception. The breakfasts are delicious. There is a wonderful spread of everything you could imagine, hot and cold, including piles of fresh fruit, and oranges which you can squeeze yourself. The pool is a good size and the area surrounding it is lovely, with gorgeous views of coniferous and olive trees, and beyond them the sea about half a mile away. There are several really good reasonably priced tavernas nearby, though beware we were charged €22.50 for one portion of rabbit stifado at Delphinia! The beach at Gerakas is wonderfully unspoilt and is only a 20 minute stroll away. There are daily boat excursions to Turtle Island and the blue caves starting at Porto Roma, just 15 minutes walk away. We would thoroughly recommend staying here and hope to return in future years.
Good, not luxury, just good
Having stayed a week from 2nd September, I can't believe the variations in recent reviews. We had a very nice week in what we were told was a "senior suite" as opposed to the "junior" we booked. This had a sea view (although the sea is a good walk away) and was private and spacious, but we found the bathroom quite small and cramped, and with only the one soap dispenser over the bath, so to wash your hands you had to lean over the bath to squirt the soap (or get your own soap). The room was clean enough, but we couldn't say it was spotless. All the staff we met were very friendly and helpful, but special thanks to Elke on reception, a particularly resourceful lady! We thought the air con was pretty good (and very necessary) We stayed half board, and found breakfast good enough. Judging by the few people eating there in the evenings, most other guests must have been on B&B. We always found something to eat from the buffet at dinner, not a great deal of choice but ok. The one night we ate at Villa Rossa we were disappointed. This was for my wife's birthday and we wanted something a little more special. We asked what the "fish of the day"was and was told there wasn't one, and the wine we chose from the menu the waiter said he could get the next day. Sorry, we didn't understand that at all. Although there was no "fish of the day", we managed to have "croaker", which was so small it would have taken three for a decent meal. We would have gone back into the Belvedere for the buffet if it had not been too late! Other guests we spoke to were also disappointed with Villa Rossa, saying that other local restaurants were better for food and value. Although some of the above sounds critical, we enjoyed our stay in the countryside, a nice quiet spot, with various animals wondering about, chickens, peacocks and goats all very near. The walks to beaches are downhill, certainly far more than the 5 minutes I've seen quoted, maybe 800 metres of so to the nearest ones, and in 30+ degrees a bit of a struggle coming back up! Porto Roma beach is narrow, not much room if you don't want to stay long enough to hire a sunbed and shade. Nice restaurant there (Porto Roma?) though. Gerakas beach is a bit further (with a car park) and much bigger and wider, quite a bit roped off for the turtle eggs but plenty of sunbeds and shades. One end seems to be an unofficial nudist area. A good clean sandy beach with water so warm and shallow when we were there. Well worth the walk. We had a car for a couple of days and particularly enjoyed the west and north of the island, not at all busy on the roads and some very beautiful places. Overall we have good memories of Belvedere, and thought it good, but not "luxury", and certainly feel some recent reviews are overcritical and unfair from our experience.
My husband and I booked the trip for the two of us but a week before my mother wanted to come with us. I emailed the hotel as my mother has a stroller and needs a walk in shower as she can’t get into a bath and I also asked to be near a lift. The hotel got straight back to me and said they would do everything they can do to help us. And true to the word they did everything thing we asked for. We had a great holiday the bar staff were great especially Nikos in the poolside bar. The Villa Rossa food & wine bar also good we had a couple of lovely meals and wine . We would recommend this hotel if you want a peaceful holiday the views are great we will go back again.
