Couple holiday (aged 25 and 30)
We stayed at Avra Beach for 10 days all inclusive. Overall we really enjoyed our holiday and came away feeling relaxed and looking forward to returning to Rhodes. The room: We upgraded to one of the newer rooms before we arrived after reading some of the reviews about the older standard rooms. We were glad we did this as the room was beautiful. We looked out over the pool with a side view of the sea. The room was modern, had everything you needed and we couldn't find any real negatives. When we walked past some of the older rooms we could see that they were quite dated and were glad we upgraded. The food/drink: Overall food was very good, there were lots of different options for breakfast lunch and dinner and there were some themed nights such as chinese night when we were there. The snack bar that served gyros and pizza near the beach was amazing and probably the best food. The drinks were okay, they felt a little watered down and were local brands but they were good enough and we enjoyed the majority of them. The staff: We were overall impressed with the staff, they were very friendly and the dining room was well run considering they were having to serve the food and also keep the place clean during meal times. There was very little social distancing but i suppose this comes down to the guests rather than the staff. The staff all wore masks and insisted on serving the food rather than you serving yourself which made it feel a lot more covid safe. We felt the entertainment team didn't really match the hotel, they made the place feel a bit more butlins style and did become quite irritating as the holiday went on. They tend to make quite a lot of noise, with one of them making cuckoo noises over the microphone and shouting about pool activities. They also spent a lot of time trying to sell their t-shirts. We also felt it was quite unprofessional that they were trying to encourage people to go on a night out with them to Faliraki, we declined as if we wanted to go to Faliraki we would have booked a holiday there. The two girls on the entertainment team seemed like they felt they were on an 18-30 clubbing resort. They walked up and down the beach approaching younger couples to go on this night out. The next day they spent most of their time talking about how drunk they were with the guests that went and bad mouthing some of the guests about their behaviour on the night out. it just didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the vibe of the hotel. We appreciate they are their to entertain the children really and we would possibly look to book and adult only hotel next time. We were also disappointed in the level of service that one group of guys received when they came to the hotel after a couple of days of our stay. They were a large group of 10+ men who were paying for bottles of champagne and buying branded alcohol instead of the all inclusive. As soon as they arrived all of the staff were buzzing around them including the manager and it then felt like the level of service for others went downhill. At dinner time they had bottles of wine served to them at their table and it seemed like they had large tables reserved for them. It just felt like because they were deciding to pay extra for stuff that they were given a different level of service to the rest of us who had payed a lot of money to stay there also. Evening entertainment: We had some good evening entertainment provided by external companies, traditional greek dancing, tribute singing acts etc but other nights the entertainment was provided by the in house entertainment team which felt again very butlins style. One night was bingo which we were going to have a go at but were told we had to pay for this - which felt completely ridiculous in an all inclusive hotel. Another night was some sort of act where they got the guests involved in some sort of strip show which again felt completely out of place in the resort. The sea and surroundings: We spent most of the 10 days on the beach as it was a bit quieter than round the pool. The sea was lovely and the views over Turkey were also lovely. The only negative was there are a lot of sharp large rocks in the water and it is a rocky beach so i would strongly advise that you buy some water shoes for getting in and out of the water. We bought some from the shop on site after two days and it was a life saver! I wouldn't let it put you off the beach though as it was lovely and clean. We were a little confused that we didnt get a wristband or anything to show we were from the hotel as it is not a closed off beach and realistically anybody could walk onto the resort off the beach. We were questioned by the lifeguard one day if we were from the hotel when coming in from the beach which was a little disappointing as we had already been there a week at this point and had had discussions with her and smiled at her everyday. The area: Where the hotel is located is perfect, we hopped on the bus which stops directly outside the hotel to go into the old town which took about ten minutes. The old town is lovely and very picturesque, definitely worth a visit or two! We also took a day trip to Symi island which left from the old town port. It was 50 euros for the two of us which seemed really cheap for a boat trip two hours there and back. also it included a a stop off at the most beautiful cove you've ever seen where we were given the option of snorkeling in the clearest water for free as part of the trip. Symi island is beautiful and definitely worth the boat trip. Would highly recommend this!!! Last but not least we really enjoyed the jewellery shop in the reception. The couple who ran the shop were so lovely and the jewellery was really good value, definitely worth a visit and a purchase or two! Despite some of the negatives we had a fantastic holiday and loved Rhodes. We would definitely return to Rhodes and would consider Avra beach again. Considering we went during a difficult time with Covid we thought the hotel did a brilliant job of making it safe whilst also allowing us to try and forget about the pandemic. It's close to the airport so only took about 10-15 minutes on the coach transfer. If you're looking for a decent 3-4* all inclusive holiday in Rhodes then i would 100% recommend Avra Beach.
